Messi inks new Barca deal

The Catalan giants have inserted a €700million buyout clause into the 30-year-old’s terms.

Messi, who had been linked with a transfer to Manchester City, has won five FIFA Ballon d’Or awards in his career as well as 29 trophies with Barcelona, including eight La Liga titles, four Champions League crowns and five Copas del Rey.

He has scored over 600 senior career goals for club and country.

Meanwhile, Messi hopes Inter and AC Milan return to the Champions League in the near future.

The Rossoneri have not been involved in European club football’s premier competition since 2013/14 while Inter’s most recent appearance came in 2011/12.

“Italian football in recent years is no longer the same and I believe that this has to do not only with the non-qualification to the World Cup,” Messi said.

“For example, two greats in Serie A, Milan and Inter, are no longer where they were about ten years ago and no longer play in the Champions League, and this affects all Italian football.

“They are basically trying to get back. The two Milanese clubs must return to be competitive at European level.”

Barcelona are 6/1 to win the Champions League this season and 1/5 to clinch the La Liga title. Meanwhile, Messi is 8/1 to be the top scorer in the Champions League in 2017/18.
