AC Milan have named former player Gennaro Gattuso as their new head coach after parting company with Vincenzo Montella.

Montella’s departure came in the wake of Sunday’s goalless draw with Torino, the fourth home game in a row in which they have failed to score.

The Rossoneri are seventh in the Serie A table after 14 matches having lost six games already.

Milan finished sixth last season and have under-achieved again so far this term despite making 11 signings in the summer, including Leonardo Bonucci, Andre Silva and Andrea Conti.

Montella had been in charge at the San Siro since June 2016 while it is unclear whether Gattuso’s appointment is temporary or permanent.

Former Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti has been linked with a return to Milan this year. He won a Serie A title and the Champions League twice in his previous eight-year spell at the club before going on to enjoy spells with Chelsea, Paris St-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Gattuso spent 14 years as a player at Milan between 1999 and 2013 after previously starring for Perugia, Rangers and Salernitana. The 39-year-old also represented Italy on 73 occasions and has managerial experience at Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa.

Milan are 1/3 to beat Benevento on Sunday while Napoli are 5/6 to win the Serie A title this season and Juventus 13/8.
