Euro 2024 | Hungary VS Switzerland; Saturday 15 June at 21:00 GMT +8

Hungary and Switzerland will face off at the RheinEnergieStadion in Dortmund to start the European Championships. Hungary has a poor record in the Euros, having failed to qualify for ten consecutive editions before 2016. However, they have improved since then, finishing as leaders of Group G and without a single defeat in their eight games. Switzerland has been regular participants in the Euros, reaching the quarter-finals in the most recent edition, their best ever finish at the Euros. In qualifying for Euro2024 Germany, Switzerland finished second in Group I and suffered a disappointing defeat against Romania.

Seven years have passed since the last match between Hungary and the United States, but the two teams shared seven goals in the previous match. Hungary has not won a clean sheet in their last five games, and their defense has been one of the worst in the group stage of the last Euros, conceding an average of two goals per game.

Hungary national team coach Marco Rossi will continue to rely on Dominik Szoboszlai, the nation’s captain and joint all-time top scorer with 12 goals in 40 appearances, and Attila Fiola, the most experienced player with 56 caps, for the team’s upcoming qualifier match.

Switzerland’s head coach, Murat Yakin, will be without Breel Embolo, Denis Zakaria, and Rubén Vargas due to injuries. Xherdan Shaqiri, the nation’s all-time top scorer, will start upfront, while Granit Xhaka will be watched in the middle of the park after his impressive campaign with Leverkusen.
