After scoring a hat-trick in Everton’s 4-0 victory against West Ham United, Wayne Rooney was quick to praise caretaker boss David Unsworth.

Unsworth has been in charge of first-team affairs since Ronald Koeman was axed more than five weeks ago and has presided over a difficult spell at Goodison Park.

Wednesday’s win against the Hammers is set to be Unsworth’s last game as caretaker manager because Sam Allardyce is expected to be unveiled as permanent boss before Saturday’s game against Huddersfield Town, which the Toffees are 8/13 to win.

Rooney’s third goal against David Moyes’ team was a strike from inside his own half after he had latched on to Joe Hart’s clearance, and the former Manchester United star said: “It’s one of, if not the best, goal I’ve ever scored.

“I don’t think I’ve ever struck a football better in my life. To score my first hat-trick for Everton, I’m delighted.

“For us as a team it was important to win, the last few weeks have been tough. We have been hurting so it was important to get a clean sheet first off which was long overdue.

“We have to give a lot of thanks to David Unsworth. He stepped in at a difficult time and he tried to steady the ship. I’m delighted for him that we got this victory. It’s important for the club.”

The victory has lifted Everton up to 13th in the Premier League table and they are 11/8to finish in the top half.

Rooney is 6/4 to score at any time against Huddersfield while Everton are 7/2 to win the match by a two-goal margin.
