Liverpool vs Spartak Moscow

Jurgen Klopp’s men have been forced into a decider against the Russians after throwing away a 3-0 lead against Sevilla last time out

The Reds are three points ahead of the Russians going into the final match of the group stage

What do Liverpool need to do to qualify?

Liverpool’s goal difference is seven better than Spartak’s, but unfortunately for Jurgen Klopp, teams on the same number of points are not sorted by goal difference in Uefa competitions.

That means the Reds must pick up a draw against the Russians to avoid going out on head-to-head record, after drawing 1-1 in Moscow.

If the groups were decided on goal difference, Liverpool would have gone through if they avoided a 4-0 loss.

The only other way Klopp’s side can go through with a defeat is if Sevilla lose away to Maribor.

If Sevilla draw and Liverpool lose, all three teams will end up on nine points.

The group would then be sorted on head-to-head record between the three teams, which would mean Spartak finishing top, Sevilla second and Liverpool third.

But it’s not all doom and gloom as Liverpool will finish top with the expected win over the Russians.

That’s according to Charlie Nicholas who is confident of a Reds win.

Liverpool know victory over their opponents at Anfield will ensure they finish top of Group E.

If Jurgen Klopp’s side slip up though, La Liga side Sevilla and Spartak could qualify at the expense of the Merseyside club.

Nicholas told Sky Sports: “Will Liverpool bottle it? I’d be very surprised if they did even after what happened in Seville. I’d expect them to do the business after another fine win at the weekend.

“We know they’ve got defensive problems, especially with Joel Matip out, but I actually see this being a really comfortable night with their home record being very decent this season.

This is another one where I see the home crowd getting to the visitors and I think Liverpool will pick them off when they get desperate and come out.”

Klopp has insisted he will field his strongest possible team this evening despite facing Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
