Mourinho: Bale will stay at Real

Jose Mourinho has admitted that Manchester United have no chance of signing Gareth Bale from Real Madrid this month.

The Wales international had been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with Mourinho admitting before his team’s UEFA Super Cup clash with last term’s Champions League winners that he would be keen to sign the former Spurs star.

The 28-year-old started alongside Karim Benzema on Tuesday as Real beat United, last season’s Europa League winners, 2-1, thanks to goals by Casemiro and Isco in Skopje.

United were second-best in the first half but improved after the break, although Romelu Lukaku’s goal proved to be too little too late for Mourinho’s team.

The United manager said when asked whether his pursuit of Bale was over: “I think so. I think clearly the club wants him, the manager wants him, the player wants it. I think game over. Because I think now he’s going to stay.”

Bale reiterated that view after the match, saying: “I’m just concentrating on my football. I’m not listening to anything. I don’t read anything.

“I’m just enjoying being here, playing as much as I can and winning trophies. I’m trying to get my fitness up pretty much after not playing fully for eight or nine months.”

United, 7/2 to win the Premier League title this season, are 2/7 to beat West Ham on Sunday while Lukaka is 1/3 to be their top scorer in 2017/18.
