Marco Silva takes the reigns at Watford for his first competitive campaign in charge of the Hornets, and he will be hoping both he and his new side can have a better season than last term. The new boss saw Hull relegated last season thanks to a very poor opening half of the campaign, whilst Watford only narrowly avoided the drop.
They have made some useful acquisitions over the summer period, bringing in Fluminense forward Richarlison and a whole new midfield set up of Will Hughes, Tom Cleverley, and Nathaniel Chalobah. Just as exciting is the injury free Roberto Pereyra, who was brought in last summer but spent the majority of the campaign on the sidelines.
Watford’s pre-season has been rather low key, with them beating Viktoria Plzen and Eibar but drawing against Woking, Aston Villa, and Real Sociedad and losing to Wimbledon. In fairness their opening two games saw them field a vastly under-strength side, and they will be expected to put in a more dynamic performance now that competitive football is back.
Liverpool’s pre-season has seen them win the Premier League Asia Trophy and come second in the Audi Cup, beating a host of teams but failing when they came up against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.
As far as recruitment goes they’ve spent big money on Mohamed Salah, and so far he has impressed, and their other new signings Andrew Robertson and Dominic Solanke look shrewd buys too. The one shadow looming over Jurgen Klopp is Barcelona, who are flush with cash after the sale of Neymar, constantly pursuing star play-maker Phillipe Coutinho. The Brazilian is carrying a minor knock at the moment and could be left out, due to a combination of that injury and the speculation surrounding him.

Watford’s home record in the Premier League is actually quite good, with them winning four of their final eight home games of the season and finding the net in six of them. Liverpool have won four, drawn three, and lost two of their last nine away matches in the league, keeping a clean sheet in just three of them.
I can’t see any clean sheets being on offer here, so we’re backing Both Teams to Score at 4/5, and given Watford’s decent home record and Marco Silva’s promising start to Premier League life, odds of 5/1 look hugely overpriced for a Watford win.
Etienne Capoue could be the dark horse in this squad. The French midfielder scored all seven of his Premier League goals last season from open play and inside the penalty box, which happens to be a weak spot for Liverpool. The visitors conceded 1.4 goals per game from inside the area and 67% of their goals conceded away from Anfield came from open play, so odds of 7/1 for Capoue to score anytime look fantastic value for money. We’re going for that along with a 2-1 win for The Hornets at 20/1.
